Integrity is defined as “the state of being whole and undivided”. Structural Integrity is the ability of the structure to perform its duty (by being whole and undivided) without failure. Failure can be separation, large deformation or instability.
The duty of the structure is generally to carry loads of either definitive or varying in nature under certain operating conditions. (The systems supported by the structure may sometimes be the main design aspect).
The failure can be an excessive deformation, separation of a component or some other issue that makes the structure (& hence the supported system) not meeting its expected requirements.
Structural Integrity, thus, is the basic requirement of any structure and ensuring it is the duty of all engineers that are involved in that structure’s product life cycle.
The entire subject of structural integrity is as complex as answering a question “How, Where & When the designed structure will be operated and Where, When and How the components of the structure are likely to fail?”. It is the author’s view that it can be as simple as understanding the relationship between Strength and Load. Failure occurs when applied load exceeds the strength.
In simple terms, the engineer need to ensure all aspects of failure modes are anticipated and the structure is designed to ensure its strength is always higher or equal to the load that it is subjected to, hence ensuring structural integrity.
Due to the complexity of different aspects of the product life cycle and multiple stakeholders (as shown in the picture above) it may not be easy to comprehend why some things are done certain way. Exposing the engineers (involved in specific aspects of evaluation) to the overall process can be very beneficial. It can be said that all aspects of Structural Integrity Evaluation are captured by the details in the picture above.
